Lately I’ve become such a postcard lover\nespecially of the ones I get from you\nand if, these days, they don’t come quite so often\nthey charm me more than ever when they do\nI picture you beside a sunny harbour\nwaiting for a boat to come to shore\nyour finger lingering on a postcard spinner\nin the doorway of a tacky tourist store\nOr whiling away those warm enchanted evenings\nwriting in the corner of some café\nthose careless collections of words and feelings\nyou happened to feel like sending me that day\nI save every card, although it gets hard\nto keep some order amongst those random souvenirs\nIt amazes me some, the way we’ve become\nsuch postcard lovers, divided by the oceans\nand the years\nHave you found yourself some wonderful companion\nand all the happiness that heaven allows\nor are you homesick for that grey and drizzly nation\nas you walk home amidst the evening crowds\nThe postcards I send to you from my own travels\ncan hardly match the ones you send to me\nbut at least I give you news of what I’m doing\nand open my heart to you occasionally\nLooking back on all the cards you’ve written\nfrom every far-flung corner beneath the sun\nthey say so little of the life you’re really leading\nso little of the person you’ve become\nBut they still bear the traces of all the special places\nWe’ve kept deep within our hopes and in our fears\nIt amazes me some, the way we’ve become\nsuch postcard lovers, divided by the oceans\nand the years
